Ketamine infusions was created by asiana88
I have had severe chronic pain in my back & shoulders for over 37 years. Almost all the discs in my back are bulging and have had 2 failed surgeries on back (L5/S1) & R shoulder. Was on 390mg on MS Mono daily, sometimes Ordine for breakthrough pain, plus Diazepam etc.
Saw my Pain Management Specialist in January & he recommended Ketamine infusions due to the very high dosage of medications.
Had 5 at weekly intervals, now down to monthly and after next infusion go to every 2 months.
I go to my local hospital as a Day patient, am there for about 4 hours then home.
WHAT a difference the infusions have made !! I am now down to 90mg daily of MS Mono since beginning of February with no major withdrawals & next month go into hospital to come off that and go onto Norspan patches. My GP has been such a rock through all the years of pain - don't think I could have done it without her support & understanding. (Aren't I lucky ???)
Yes, I still have pain, but Ketamine changes the way the brain perceives pain & I feel like I have my life back. Some days are better than others, but I only wish that someone had suggested this treatment a very long time ago.
I believe my Pain Specialist presented my case at a conference recently so he obviously considers the treatment a huge success.
Anyone else had Ketamine infusions with results like mine ?

Hi

Ketamine has had a lot of publicity, and I have been grateful for your post as Google has been my source until now.

As far as I am aware, it is used for many things, but still considered experimental in Australia.

I am interested what State you are in and at what cost was this treatment to you. You said you recieved it through infusions, were these through an implant, pump IV, or how? You write local hospital... public or private? Clearly you were there as a day patient.

Additionally, how did you get access to this treatment, I read that your pain specialist was involved, was this thorugh private practice or a public clinic? Could go on with 101 questions, but you get the idea..

I'm sorry if I am asking very personal questions, but I am not satiisfied with living with chronic pain, and although I accept this as a reality, if there is a treatment available, I want to know more.

Thanks
Marley

More than happy to help !!
I live in rural South Australia & had the Ketamine infusions done at our local Community Hospital. I am a Workcover client so fortunately they are reimbursing all costs. The Ketamine itself cost $510.35.
I have the infusions through a normal saline IV drip & can walk around whilst having the treatment.
Re Pain Specialist - thru his private practice. Had to get approval from W/Cover for the treatment.
The ONLY drawback has been that every time I have an infusion I get the WORST muscle spasm imaginable in the thoracic region of my back.
No-one can explain why - they are not listed anywhere as even a very rare side effect.
Due to this - my GP & I have decided to see how I go without any more infusions.
As I said previously - best thing that ever happened to me re pain levels & reduction in medication.
You are welcome to use my info to give to your Pain Management Specialist ( I do assume that you have one ).
All my very best to you - I believe Ketamine is being used extensively in Pain Clinics, but mostly on an inpatient basis - MUCH higher doses involved.
I did a ton of research on Ketamine infusions before having them as I was a bit wary about having the treatment - SO glad I did.

This is such good news to my ears because after waiting 7 months for W.C approval in NSW I Finally have it for the week after next...I don't want to put the date down here for fear of being identified because I had to take action after them ignoring my specialists approval.

I'm scared but I'm also excited to think I might get the relief I need because I'm housebound and I have no quality of life anymore. Actually, I don't want to live like this anymore so I hope something changes with this treatment!

Thanks for your post it's very much appreciated!

I'll,let you all know when I'm there and how I go with it.

The next treatment after that is the spinal stim that I know I need but I was ignoring it because I live on my own and I have no help what so ever...

After a series of Ketamine infusions, you may find that you don't need the spinal stimulator. Not knowing precisely what your condition is - that is just a maybe - but I wish you the success that I enjoyed. I has made my life a whole lot better than it was - hope the K infusions do the same for you. I too live alone and know how tough it can be living with chronic pain on your own.

All my very best wishes - let us all know how it goes for you !!

Thank-You so very much!

I'm hoping it will be some kind of miracle cure because I surely need it.

I have 2 beautiful grand daughters that I love and adore so I really hope something changes for me with this treatment so I can spend more time with them because atm it's very very limited!

I suppose I shouldn't have the expectations that this will cure me because in reality it won't however, it might hopefully reset the pain pathways that supplies the nerves in my legs. I just want some quality of life because that has gone out the window and I'm basically housebound and I have put on 19 kilos of extra weight that my body didn't need because it's too much extra weight my body didn't need and it's putting too much strain on my back and legs which is probably making everything worse...Carrying this much weight has limited me in every way! I have nerve pain in both legs but one leg is much worse than the other one. My legs rest on iced up gel packs on and off all day. And one calf muscle is half the size of the other one now and the foot is all cracked up underneath to the point it's painful to walk on...and callous's all down my big toe and side/heel foot....

So sorry to whinge here but I know you all understand what it's like to be suffering with chronic pain 24/7, so it's safe to do it here because you are all so supportive!

I'll be back once they start the infusion to give you an update. I'm just very scared that I'm being cut off all medication instead of cutting it down slowly so I hope the pain specialist doesn't leave me with nothing if I need it. I think that's what is scaring me the most, trusting him when I haven't been able to trust him in the past....changing to another pain specialist would take 12 months to get an apt!

Talk soon
