Hi everyone,

I may be grasping at straws here but has anyone ever had a breast reduction to deal with neck pain, and if so, did it help? This has never been suggested to me but I'm wondering if it would ease the arthritis pain that I have in my neck. I am a size 12DD which is not huge, but I have quite a small build so it's a little out of proportion. I am thinking of asking my doctor if it might in at least reducing the pain and muscle tightness. I do feel I slouch forward because of it. Any advice?

Hi lindajane,

Yes, overly large breasts can indeed be a contributing factor in neck pain. I don't have any experience with it or know anyone who has had a breast reduction as a solution, but evidently it is done. Have a look here:

Hi Lindajane, , i have never had a breast reduction myself but do find my usual bust size of 14-DD has increased severely to a 18 -20 E/ F as well as the rest of my body weight(23 kg) due to the severe weight gain brought on by being on Lyrica. If find i can only tolerate wearing a bra if i have to go out as it causes restriction and pain around my rib cage and pain in my neck.and shoulders, and we are hoping that the change over from Lyrica to Neurontin ( Gabapentin) will continue to help reverse this weightgain, as i have already lost 5 kg over the past 3 weeks so far .

I did have a former girlfriend who decided that she would undergo a breast reduction for the reason of increasing neck pain as it was causing major problems for her and her posture on her petite frame and she felt that it had been beneficial for her after the intitial healing time. Good luck with your research

Thank you both for your responses. I also have a tendency to put on weight lately, and am on Lyrica so maybe that is contributing to it. Does Lyrica cause a drop in metabolism? I have been doing lots of walking and eating well but am not dropping weight like I normally would.

Mrs Shingles, are you finding the Neurontin effective for the pain?

Hi lindajane,

Yes, Lyrica is notorious for causing weight gain. However, I have been told by a pain specialist that it doesn't happen to everyone. You can minimise it by trying to eat healthily and move as much as you can. If you are too immobile, it could get out of hand. However, if it is helping your pain (and it definitely does mine) then it's probably worth a bit extra weight.

Dear Mary,
Thanks for your reply. I'm sorry if my first post sounded glum.....I've had another consult with a doctor with a possible pudendal nerve problem.
So I'll be trying some other medication for the pain.

Hi Blossoms,

There is no way that your post sounded glum! It's good that you have found a possible diagnosis and new medication. I hope that it helps you. Meanwhile remember that we are here to support you 🙂

Hi lindajane,

I know a few women who have had breast reductions to help relieve neck and back pain. My daughter is planning to do so after she finishes breastfeeding (she was a size 12G before pregnancy and breastfeeding, and they're a lot bigger now).

Two of the women I know had reductions to a C cup. They were both significantly overweight at the time of surgery. When they lost weight later and ended up an A cup they regretted having the surgery before they lost weight.

Obviously that is not everyone's experience, but it's worth thinking about.

Hi Lindajane, sorry i missed seeing your question about the Neurontin. Yes i am finding that the Neurontin is working on the nerve pain a bit better than the Lyrica had been. Not sure if my body just got used to the 300mg twice daily dose , but find that the current 2100mg daily intake of Neurontin is working better on the new arrival of spreading nerve pain that has been plaguing me for the past 6 months.
And it is starting to make a dent in the Lyrica weightgain slowly which is wonderful as the extra weight has caused more pain on my joints.
