Pain relief
Hi Guys,
Just joined today.
I've been a chronic pain sufferer for over 30 years now after multiple spinal surgeries and more pending. My body is obviously a different makeup to most people's as oral pain medications do not work for me. This has been proven by pain clinics over the years and a recognised pain specialist here in Adelaide. I get all the side effects but absolutely no pain relief.
Many years ago I was put on Pethidine (injections) by my neurosurgeon. After he retired and Pethidine was frowned upon for some weird reason I was then put on Morphine injections, mixed with Promethazine to prolong the effects.
I can only get 5 injections on a script and try to make them last at least 3 months or about 1 jab every 3-4 weeks when my pain gets intolerable. I really wish I had something that worked in-between injections. My wife, who is also my carer, has been trained to administer these injections.
My issue is that, why am I always treated like a junky and not as an individual with individual needs re my pain..?
I have been assured by two neurosurgeons that if I'm taking morphine for pain, I will never become addicted and they were right. I hate them as they are very painful.
And yes, I do realise they are not something for long term pain relief but they are the ONLY way I can get relief when I need it even if it only last a day or maybe two.
Cheers,
Ron.
Hi Ron,
welcome and please look through the forum and search for similar symptoms to yourself I have lumbar spondylosis nothing major just degenerative I have Radio Frequency Nuerotomy (nerves burnt) every six months it gives a me some relief it could be something to discuss with your doctor , ask for a referral to a pain physician I have a great one.
you could try doing a pain management course through a local hospital you can pick up some hints from the occupational therapist or physiotherapist plus the other guys ie Psychologist, Drs etc
Hope this helps

Thanks johnno,
Over the last 30 + years I've been through all you suggest. In some cases, several times. Rhisolysis (nerve burning) spinal injections, physios, hypnotherapy, acupuncture, acupuncture with electrified needles, 7 months in the Adelaide Hospital Pain Clinic, 12 months in a private pain clinic, and have seen a specialist pain clinician, massage, remedial massage, the list goes on.
It's due to all of these failing that I was put on to my injections.
I just received a letter (via Email this morning) from our National Health Minister that hints at some hope for the first time.
My current doctor is retiring next month and the new one I think I'll be seeing (have seen him once before) listens to what you say and seems to be on my side as your personal doctor should be.
Cheers,
Ron.
Fingers crossed mate
