Medicare Locals
We thought we would create a Medicare Locals category, to show you all the role that Medicare Locals are playing in the treatment of chronic pain. It is becoming increasingly obvious that the pain clinics are stretched to the limit with pain management and if Medicare Locals can become involved and run programs, it will help to reduce the load that the public pain clinics are facing.
Medicare Locals are becoming more involved with chronic pain management, with training programs being available for doctors and practice nurses.
I have attached a press release that was distributed by Pain Australia in April.
There is also a link here to the Australian Medicare Local Alliance for those of you who would like further information.

Hi Mary
I have read your attachment and have never herd of "Mardicare Locals." What are they, is it a New South Wales thing, and do they still exist?

Hi Marley,
This thread will become obsolete shortly. In recent times we have had Medicare Locals which are organisations that oversee all the health practices within a region. For example, in Adelaide we have NAML (Northern Adelaide Medicare Local) and also CAHML (Central Adelaide and Hills Medicare Local). There are several others. They are about to be replaced by Primary Health Networks which will essentially do the same thing. We will have only 2 in SA. They are Metropolitan and Country. I am not sure if they are the exact names, but I think I am correct.
The other news for SA is that we are developing a Statewide Pain Management Strategy. This will be a pain management plan for the whole state. As you can imagine it is a very big task. However, I think that there will be many improvements in the way that pain is managed. We are the only state that has not endorsed the National Pain Strategy of 2010, so we are somewhat behind the other states where they have been putting strategies in place for pain management for 4 years now.

If I can contribute in any way, please let me know, I figure the South Australian health system is going through massive changes, some not in the interest of the patient. Pain Management has never been high on the agenda.
