Hold up there. One thing to note. Any opoids used by medicine and mainly by us older folk are treated as if we are all raging druggies and have no common sense or even sense. All mentally suspect in their opinions. They being " the bureaucracy". And governments dont do a blooming thing re the illicit drugs for years killing young and stupid people, dumbed down deliberately by political correctness at schools so can be manipulated to follow blindly etc. Seems stamped their plus some of older Seniors common sense too. Drugs have been around for year - well remember reefers or uppers and downers in the 1950's around the London clubs being offered free. Back then we teens thought anyone who took them had a screw loose in the top paddock.
Still think they're not 100% sane as risking their health and lives today, due to these drugs being even worse . Manufactured with all sorts of deadly stuff just so as to make even more millions and someone stops government doing the Zero tolerance which would stamp out the illicit drug trade once and for all. Has to be greed again.
We are not being hooked on OTC codeine itself as offered today. Or even script.. Laughed when I heard report, its only 8mg OTC or 15mg behind the counter via having to ask a pharmacist who wants to question your history and why etc. So some safeguard there. Hooked people overdose on illegals very few on what we are offered by our PBS because they limit the dose and of course GP's issue them Do see celebs getting the privately in USA or places where not regulated. (No accounting for them unless just plain lost their marbles.)
Some of the other opoids could well carry some risk of overdose and addiction. But addiction comes with taking too high a dose I am sure. And you have to get some sort of a high from it. Can get that from a good jog in the morning as raises the same endorphin's in the brain, or a workout in the gym.
Not sure why they are so down on legal opoid medicines. Sure dont limit illegals when could. By the legislation they are all too willing to alter or pass to punish us older often poorer ones seemingly!
The government should and could actually stand up to the Snivel Libertarians and pay the cost of bringing in the Smart Card would not only do the job of stopping the rorting of legal opoids by doctor shopping but also the rorting by some, who are reported to be using up their safety allowances by going to clinics etc where face not known and whole groups using the one card until target reached and rest of year free drugs. Plus a whole raft of reported ways of defrauding Medicare.
