Hi Bluesqueen,

Welcome to our forum. We do have some members here who have jaw pain. They may pop in here in the next few days and share their experiences with you. We all understand what constant pain is like, so I hope that you can get some help soon. Are you on any medications to help your pain?

Mary

Hi bluesqueen,

I found the panadeine forte only ever just took the edge off my jaw pain and I ended up at a gastroenterologist with codeine induced gastroparesis from being on it for so long. So you are right in being worried about the effect on your tummy.

Have you tried getting a maxofacial specialist or physiotherapist who specializes in jaw/facial pain? I found orofacial surgeons don't have much idea on how to manage the condition on a day to day basis.

So far the only thing I have found to bring the pain down to manageable levels was 10mg Norspan patch, but the side effects have meant that I've needed to go down to 5mg and it's not helping much with the pain now.

I don't think people realise how severe orofacial pain can be. I continually feel like I've been punched in both my cheeks with an iron fist amongst other symptoms.

Try www.tmj.org too for some support and info as well.

This is a very specialised area and most medical professionals, in my experience, have little understanding of it or training in it so they try and treat all the symptoms surrounding it rather than knowing how to deal with the root cause.

Good luck.

You are not alone. You can also email the above website; I did and they were very understanding because they lady who runs it has jaw pain from failed jaw surgery/implants.

Best wishes,
Fee

As an ex dental nurse, i wonder if a phone call to the Dental Association in your state could help. There are some dentists who specialise in the treatment of these problems and they often know more about it than doctors do.

Just a thought.

Ps. bluesqueen, did the facial surgeon do an MRI to check out how your Temporomandibular (TMJ) joint is functioning as well? I have a friend who has TMJ and she has the same problem with the same nerve you do and, for her, it's all tied in together with the TMJ dysfunction.

As well as facial pain, she has problems swallowing. Do you?

I know it may be stating the obvious, but I have also found 2nd opinions are worth a go too because an MRI can show if there's any other problems with the jaw area. If he did do an MRI, how long ago was it and did he specifically look at the TMJ area? Mine has considerably deteriorated between the 2 MRIs that were taken 3 years apart.

I totally agree Mary.

It was my dentist who told me about this TMJ phsyiotherapy/pain management clinic that I am applying for treatment at; not the doctors!

I need a giant huge megaphone that will reach the whole world of doctors right now because I really feel like telling them to get their acts together and get some training in this TMJ area...and spruke a bit of public awareness at the same time!

hmmm....I wonder if I could sit on one of those giant satellites thingyies orbiting the earth with a giant microphone......could be dangerous cos I'm feeling pretty jacked off at the moment! Of course I would pay for it after in jaw pain!!!!

Note to self: Forgiveness, acceptance, Fee; remember those pain management principles woman; this anger is only going to increase your pain!!!

...but some days....

Sorry to hear you have had a similar long, unfruitful journey as mine.

Sounds like we have different conditions, but, at the end of the day, similar problems with severe facial pain.

I hope the splint helps.

Best wishes,
Fee
