The next time we will hear from you it will be from the big red centre, uprooting and leaving family and friends behind is always a tough decision and upsetting at the same time. With modern technology these days it is not hard to keep in touch, all you need is Skype or a similar program and a web cam, Skype to Skype is free and you get to see who you are speaking to. This is a great opportunity for you to further your career and also meet a lot of amazing people of different cultures from all over the world, if you are interested in photography what a wonderful place to take some stunning pictures of the outback, and of the sun going down and the changing colours of your surroundings.
Tom I am sure you will find a good GP to take over your case, sure there will be a breaking in period where you both get to know each other, as long as your new GP converses with your old one all should go well.
Look forward to some pictures and tales of daily life, good luck Tom.

Don

Hey Tom,

Best of luck buddy!
And Mate, I take my hat off to you taking on such a huge change in your whole life, while suffering chronic pain. Good for you and good on you! You are an inspiration to all of us!

Just one piece of advice, get your fitness levels up a bit more before you go base jumping off of the Rock! LOL

Can't wait for the pics.

Take it easy and be safe Tom!

Good luck Tom. I hope is goes really, really well for you. You deserve everything. You are a wonderful example of how to live with a chronic condition. I know the next week or two will be hard on you, so try and take a few minutes here and there for rest and relaxation exercises.

Other than that - have a ball and when you are up to it, let us know how it is going.

All the best,

Mary

looks beautiful. i was watching the living room on channel1 the other night and the guy from Bondi Vet did a day trip flying from sydeny to uluru, and several touristing things before flying back the same day to show you could do the rock in the day. One of the things they did was the open air resteraunt i think it was "dinner under the stars" but i was thinking of you as i watched the show! i assume that was where you are working- my care assitant was here and i was getting quite excited at the thought that that was where you ere now!!

i am impressed!!
i know that uluru is actually quite a way ou from Alice springs (or i think it is) do you stay at uluru and if so would that feel a bit isolated- or do you go back and forth between the rock and alice!!

I think the thing i miss more than anything else in th workd since i have been chair dependent, is travel! when i forst left school, i used to travel a lot thinking that it was something you get out of you system before you had to settle down with mortgages and stuff. I always wanted to go to kings canyon, uluru and Alice but back then travel within Australia was rediculously expensive- it was cheaper to go to Bali! So i did mainly overseas. I have often thought that i would actually like totake the Ghan all the way from adelaide to drwin, stop in alice for a whileand then fl home from darwin but its outof my price range these days and it seems the trains are not really wheelcahir friendly-they would not accept me traveling alone

i will do it one day, i would love to see the sun come p oer the rock

anyway, be careful, don't push things tooo much- enjoy the wonderful new job- you are fantastic proof of how life continues despite having to deal with serious ongoing pain- congratulations!!

Hi Tom,

That menu is absolutely to die for!! I imagine that the whole experience of watching the sunset over Uluru while enjoying that food and a drink or 2 or those wines must be awesome!

It seems that you have arrived and got yourself organized really well and you are to be congratulated! I hope that the pain/medical side of things is working out for you too.

Well done!

Mary

Hi Tom by the way you posted you sound very excited, that menu will have a lot of posters mouths watering, I bet you are not having any second thoughts about making the move now. Just hope the travelling has not caused too much of a pain explosion, you have your career sorted now to get on to that medical team together to support you.
Big open spaces and lots to discover in your time off from the kitchen will certainly be a big distraction from your pain, I envy you, it's a lovely part of the world, if you are seeking peace and solitude with great views you are in the right place and the weather ain't bad for a CPer either.
Good luck Tom keep us posted and a few pictures would be great when you get time

Hi everyone! Hope you are all well! I've been doing quite a bit of work lately, so haven't been out to see much yet, but did get a bit of a tour round Uluru on my orientation, which was nice. Went to the medical centre to give in my records and the doctor gave me a cold! Couldn't believe it! Then the patronising bitch was telling me how bad the medsI'm on and blah blah blah, I should lose some weight, and even though my records are right there in front of her, interrogates me and asks if ive tried antiinflammitories and things like that and that opioids aren't normally prescribed for my sort of damage, even though she didn't look at any of my scan results in detail!. my doc is a very experienced doctor, this one looks like she just stepped out of intern college! but then says im a fit and healthy young man and goes and orders 3 months worth of meds, as if she hadn't said anything at all! She has put a request for me to see a specialist in Alice springs hopefully in the next couple of months so at least that's something...btw kebsa, I am staying on the resort at Uluru, there is a housing area for a staff there at the back of the campgrounds, which gives us some privacy from the guests which is good..I usually start a 3pm but don't finish till after midnight most nights. They have 2 outdoor dining experiences, sounds of silence, which is more family orientated, and Tali Wiru, where I work, which is max. 20 people no children allowed out on a special place located right in the middle of Uluru and the Olgas, on a ridge, the sunsets are amazing from there! We have to do the prep then put it in a trailer and unpack it, then plate up with headlamps to stop insects from getting on the food, then repack everything, s quite a psychical challenge, but I do enjoy the work, and the whole team out there are really cool bunch of people, but thank god for endone lol, is all I can say, because it can be rather hard work! I think I need to write a letter to that doc explaining how I do Pilates, try to go to the gym twice a week, multivitamins and fish oils aswell and see what else she can try to get me to do on top of all that to help my situation. I mean its not like I'm some out of work junky pining for drugs, but I guess she probably doesn't know my situation well enough..just wish she wasn't so condescending about it all. I've been through the first 2 lessons of the course nearly, they do have some positive information and its easy enough to understand which is good! Anyways I will keep you updated and read some of the other posts in the forum in the next few days hopefully so I'm on top of how every body else is going... Hugs, Tom. B)

Tom the Doc might get a bit better the more you see her, i hate having to go through my medical history whenever you see a new doctor, I feel like saying it's all in my notes read it for gods sake, but then I suppose they want to hear it from the horses mouth so to speak. Your work sounds very demanding, having to cart to outback locations so the guest can have an experience of a lifetime, leaving you too busy to site see yourself. There no rush for you to get out and about, as looks like you have found the job that suits you to the tee. How much better is it working with a bunch of people who don't put you down all the time because of your ailment, makes working environment a whole lot better mentally. Good luck when you see the new specialist I hope this goes a lot better than your first GP appointment.
Might have to get up that way one day and if I do I will pop in and say high, would be nice to put a face on the people you meet on the forum.

Hi Tom,

As Di has said - you are an absolute inspiration. I am so happy that you are finding your job so good. It is a pity about the Dr. Perhaps give her a few more visits (book longer appointments so you can chat) and, if she is still condescending, see if you can find someone else. Sometimes it's just a matter of breaking in a new Dr. LOL. But sometimes it doesn't work. At least she has referred you to a specialist!

It's also good that you are finding the online course good because I guess that a face to face course might be hard to come by out there!

So great to hear from you.

Mary
