Finally had the big follow up meeting with the spinal doctor/surgeon at the PA earlier this morning.

Sadly, there's nothing they can do - surgery is off the table (no pun intended) as there are too many things wrong with my lower lumbar region, and they can't guarantee surgery will make things better in relation to pain.

I can look into a root nerve block as well as pain management, but that's it.

Oh well.

Hey mate,

I had a second opinion done and came out thinking what a twit he believed fusion L5/S1 isn’t an option as the next two joints are showing signs of arthritis and he believes that surgery would only make these go out in sympathy.
If I get the fusion I could then do more core physio work to strengthen my back .
He want to leave it for a few years when I’m older and less capable to do the physio required it’s a joke really I feel your pain mate .

Hey Johnno,

Best to do things sooner rather than later I think. I'm positive that if I had have taken my sciatica and back pain more seriously back in the mid-2000s, it'd be causing me much less problems now.

The "she'll be right" approach doesn't work where the back is concerned. It just kicks the can further and further along until it's a much bigger problem.

I wish doctors and specialists would acknowledge this.

In my case, they said they do this kind of surgery all the time, and the surgery isn't so much the problem, but my back is. They can see what's wrong and they can fix part of it, but they aren't entirely sure it's not going to cause worse problems (or at least that's my take on the conversation - I was sleep deprived at the time, so a lot of things went in one ear and out the other).

They've given me a couple of non-surgery options which involve seeing a pain management specialist, and the option of a nerve root block.

One thing though. While they can see the nerve compression on the imaging scans, I've been experiencing other pain also down my right leg from my buttock area (specially, to the right of the middle slightly). I had thought this was just part of the central canal and foraminal stenosis nerve problems, but apparently this is different.

I think this pain is as a result of my sacroiliac joint (I have partial L5 sacrilisation on both sides, but worse on the right side). Apparently this doesn't show up in most scans and requires a special kind of test, but didn't show up on my bone scan with radiotracer, but the records of GP visits I've been keeping, mention pain in my sacroiliac area going back to February (and before that).

Since our catch up at the Coffee Club where I said that the pain had been better, it's decided to come back with a vengeance. Back to small steps and a walking stick again.

The joys of pain.

Cheers,
Darren

Hey Darren,

Mate not good to hear that your pain levels have increased perhaps some of it brought on by the shock of no immediate help via surgery I felt the same way whereas they can see where the problem is and don’t wish to fuse the joints as I have a slight curve(scoliosis) and the next levels could go out in sympathy and I’d need fusion further and further up

Hi Johnno,

Came on the day after I said I felt I'd be ok to use those stairs. Can you imagine how I would have been if I did? :-)

But that was the week before the visit to the PA, so definitely not related.

I'm not sure why it came on when it did, but something decided to screw with me for whatever reason. Maybe karma (for thinking I could do those stairs).

That's not good about your spine. :-(

Are there any other options for you?

Cheers,
Darren
