Hi

So I have now got to the spot where the injections I have been getting are not working anymore, so the doc says its meds or surgery.

So at the moment were using Lyrica 75mg 2x day, targin 20/10 during the day and oxy 30mg at night with panadeine forte for breakthrough, and upto 20mg diazepam for cramps mostly at night or after work.

So my question is, what surgical options have people tried, I have no disk left between my l5 vertebra and my sacram and I have arthritis in that area as well.

So any ideas, and don't worry I will discuss any options with my doctor first.

Thanks

Illeatyu

Hi illeatyu,

We really can't give you advice in this area because everyone is so different. There are many people waking around with conditions similar to yours who have little or no pain. No one really knows why. Other people have significant pain with not much showing on their X-rays, MRI's etc.

The same goes for medications. What works for one does not work for another. The only thing that you can really do is take all the information that you are given and weigh up the odds before making a decision regarding surgery. If it were me, I would also definitely get more than one opinion.

All the best,

Mary

Thanks, the plan is to get lots of ideas from different people, then look them up and maybe get four or five front runners and do some research then got to my doc and say what about these, then take the ones he likes best to my pain specialist and ask his opinion.

So I am going to do lots of home work first and get several opinions, cause the first time worked out so well it scarred me for life.

Thanks

Illeatyu

Illeatyu whatever you do don't make any decision in a hurry, research every option, get second opinions and way up possible complications and side effects, I made the mistake of believing what I was told by the first surgeon I saw, in hindsight that was the wrong decision, 2 operations later and I am worse off than when I went in, when they said it would be all fixed and I would be back at work within 4 weeks I jumped straight in, so do your homework, I would hate to see anyone make the same mistake I did.

Best of luck and take your time, it's no fun being in pain, even worse if the wrong decision causes more, make sure whatever decision you make involves your partner as well.

I haven't had any disc material in my L5/S1 joint for more than a decade and have never been operated on.

The neurosurgeon I was seeing at the time told me the joint would fuse or had to be fused. He said that if it is done surgically, I would be back in 10 years getting it done again, which is due to where it is located.
He said that if I leave it alone, get help from a good pain specialist (which at that time in 1990's was a joke), the joint would fuse itself and be a permanent job, much better than they could do.

So, I left it alone and I think it has fused. I have restricted movement, but not too bad. I can no longer kneel on the ground on both knees, but can get down on one knee if I need to get down their to pick something up etc.

I've had a lot of spinal problems from the base of my scone to the tip of my tail bone and I am not going to let anyone touch me with a knife. Although I suffer a great deal of chronic pain, the Lyrica I take has cut my spinal pain down by about 40% and that to me is not only acceptable, but bloody fantastic, considering all my life I suffered very painful stiffness in my spine all day, everyday, Hyundai. The Lyrica has removed the stiffness and the pain I mentioned above.

As Mary says. We cannot advise, but please do collect the ideas. It is our bodies, and we should never blindly go with whatever any doctor says. it is our responsibility to research and ask a million questions.

After all, there are hundreds, if not thousands of horror stories of people who had back surgery. And yes there are success stories.
At the end of the day, once you have the surgery, there is no going back.

Hello Illeatu,

I don't have any experience to speak of, however I just wanted to say that I am sorry to hear of your news and wish you luck in making decisions on what to do.

Take care and all the best :)
