Multidisciplinary pain team was created by illeatyu
Hey guy's

Now I know from past experience that this is not a dumb question because I bet at least one other person is wondering the answer, so now to the question.

How do I find a multidisciplinary pain team, I have my gp, a physiologist who is expensive and a pain specialist who is very expensive, but they don't talk and they are not a team, so where do they hide, cause I need one.

Thanks for the huge number of responses I know I'll get :)

Hi illeatyu,

Multidisciplinary pain teams are normally in the large public hospitals. The only problem is that they usually have long waiting lists. Still, you could ask your GP to refer you to one and at least put your name down.

You can also put together a team much as you have done but if they are not talking to each other (a problem often seen in medicine in general, not just pain management unfortunately) then that is not as much help to you as it should be.

Are you close to any major public hospitals?

As Mary has stated they are in public hospitals setup in an outpatient service usually under the name of pain unit, while they do have a long waiting list, depending on which state you are also in, I do the waiting list for the RAH here in SA is a year, but once in all your specialist are in one area, if you hold a healthcare card all services are free and they still liaise with your GP for ongoing care, like writing scripts or if you have a problem you can talk to your GP and they can ring the pain clinic for advice, well thats how it works in this state.

And to add to what Don has said. All the specialists in the pain clinic work off the one set of notes, because you have one file there that they all access, which means they are all aware of each others thoughts and diagnoses. Plus they talk to each other.

But you need to get a referral from your GP to get into one, so the sooner you do that the better.
