Cairns - FNQ - And PAIN was created by stadoobie
Hello,

Just a quick question - does anybody have any information on the Townsville visiting Pain clinic that come to Cairns every 6 weeks?

I have a meeting with them tomorrow, after waiting 4 months, and just wondering, if any of you good people know how the process works, what the expectation is?

Thank you in advance...

Person in lots of Pain

Hi stadoobie,

Welcome to the forum.

First off, I have edited your post and removed the website address. You cannot post any website on this forum that has anything to do with health related topics, without CPA approval. If you want to do this, you need to ask and give us a chance to go to the site and review it. You can do this by sending an email to the CPA office account: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
This will come to me and I will forward it to the relevant committee.

As for the travelling pain clinic up your way, I'm afraid I have no information about them, but others may do. So just hang in there, because someone may get back to you soon.

Hi stadoobie and welcome,

I am not sure if anyone here has experience with the Townsville visiting Pain clinic in Cairns. However after a 4 month wait, I expect that you can't wait to be seen. I have just had a look at their website and they have what looks like a good multidisciplinary program. How they work that into visits every 6 weeks, I am not sure. However, go with an open mind and be prepared to embrace anything that is offered to you.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Mary

Hello again,

Please let me apologise for my ignorance in my post - regarding my link.. I JUST KNEW I should have read the precursor to the use of posting - WHOOPS!

Thank you for your replies.. Im just another sufferer of Scheuermann's kyphosis, and all level chronic DDD.. Also have the amazing Crohn disease. And a bit of OA.. But all good.. And just suffering, like you all, most of the time.

Its only really been the last few weeks that I have been reaching out for people of the same suffering.. I have endured this chronic thing for 5 years now - and as you all know - it can be relentless...

Doctors in FNQ can leave in a state of bemusement, and with the draconian protocols surrounding any pain killers that remotely work .

I have lived in Cairns now for 1.5 years after living in Melbourne forever... In Melbourne I was under the care of some amazing pain specialists and doctors - (the head of the Epworth Hospital pain management was my pain doctor)

So moving to amazing Cairns, for the, more so health reasons, it seems that life has become a struggle.. Mainly due overly strict and, almost inhumane protocols..

Well, thank you again... I look forward to reading though the forum and having a look around

Hi stadoobie,

We are reviewing your website and we may put it up when we are finished! You have a lot of reading in there.

As a matter of interest, have you ever been offered anything other than medication for your pain? The current evidence is telling us that medication is only a small part of pain management. There are many other aspects to it and a good pain management unit will put you through those.

From a personal perspective, I can tell you that you definitely need more than just medication. I accessed all the components privately because our waiting lists down here in SA are ridiculous. I saw a pain specialist who took care of the medication, a psychologist who helped me with relaxation (important to damp down the chemicals that incite pain), self hypnosis and she also helped me to develop strategies to cope with people who thought I was a hypochondriac and techniques to do things that I thought I could no longer do. i also found a physiotherapist who is well versed in neuropathic pain and she has been an enormous help.

Somewhere along the way, there was a subtle shift in focus and, although the pain was still there, I found that it wasn't my main focus. I took some Uni courses online and that kept me busy. Nowadays I will pace myself carefully, but basically I do whatever I want to. Sometimes I pay the price and sometimes I don't. One thing that I have noticed is that when i do pay the price, I often recover more quickly.

So, I hope that the appointment tomorrow will offer you the whole gamut, not just medication.

And hang in there while we all finish looking at your very good website :)

Hi Mary,

I have seen the psychologists, gained a small about of information, as far as relaxation techniques, certain cognitive behavioral therapy... And, where applicable and appropriate - I 'try' to use these..

I find that the profile of my pain, being so chronic and dynamic, that by the time pain has hit me like a tonne of bricks, that any rational form of thinking escapes me - and the pain becomes overriding leaving me little room for concentration, let alone breathing!.. So in a nutshell, I have either not mastered it, or its just beyond mastering.

Now who does not love a 'good' physio.. Its the best thing ever, again for me, that wonderment of having had muscled pummeled and bones adjusted is wonderful 'while i'm there', but 30 minutes after a physio session, I am back at the same position prior to swiping my private health cover card.. Acupuncture, was almost similar, nothing worth continuing with... Bowen was a wonderful therapy, again, same same... .. I've even done Kaiser training for 6 months (that german based back training network)!!

I have also seen sports physiologists, sports psychologists, again, to no avail, as far as, me ending up in more pain, neurosurgeons - who say you are too young to have any intervention ..

Now don't get me wrong, I have the most open, and relatively clear mind (lol) and I am willing and able to participate in many and any forms of therapy, but call me pessimistic, of the 5 years I have looked and searched for some relief - nothing apart from the pain killer has worked - even that to a limited degree...

I'm still very fortunate to work full time, and i can stand and sit when required, certainly not chained to a bench, I have a great social network and have wide and varied hobbies..

I even made that website myself.. I think I did a great job..

Thank you again Mary for your reply and looking into that website... Its purely for personal information...
